5. Experience the History of the Indian Mounds at the Hopewell Culture National Historic Park
The Mound City Group in Chillicothe, Ohio is an incredible archaeological site that offers visitors a glimpse into the past.
This ancient Native American Hopewell Culture complex is one of the best-preserved sites in the country and is designated as part of the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. It preserves the remains of the prehistoric Hopewell tribe, who lived in the area thousands of years ago.
Visitors can explore the mounds and view artifacts in the on-site museum for free. This is the only site in the national historic park that has a visitor center.
Visitors can explore Mound City Group and 5 other sites within the park, which are all surrounding the town of Chillicothe.
The park features walking and hiking trails around the mounds and outdoor areas. Visitors can learn about the culture and lives of the Native Americans that built these sacred Eearthmounds found on the site.
There are also interpretive programs available for visitors to gain an even deeper understanding of this ancient culture.
The Hopewell Culture National Historical Park Visitor Center is located at 16062 State Route 104 and offers a unique opportunity to explore history while enjoying nature at its finest
6. Visit Adena Mansion & Gardens
Adena Mansion and Gardens is a stunning 18th-century, 2,000-acre estate located just outside of town. Now, the 300-acre estate grounds house five buildings and gardens filled with lovely flowers and vegetables, as well as shrubbery and trees.
This historic site has been beautifully restored and includes an overlook on the property over the Scioto River and a view that inspired the Great Seal of Ohio. Adena Mansion was once the home of Thomas Worthington, the sixth governor of Ohio.
The mansion is open seasonally, typically from April through October. During our visit in 2022, admission for adults was $12 per person. Visit in the spring or the fall seasons for the best blooms in the gardens.
7. Explore the Ross County Heritage Center Complex
The Ross County Heritage Center is one of four museums and historical properties managed by the Ross County Historical Society.
It offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the history of Ross County and learn about its role in the Northwest Territory and Ohio, including how the town came to be Ohio’s first capital.
The Heritage Center Museum has a variety of displays, including features on Camp Sherman & World War I, historical toys, folk art, fine art, and historical vehicles.
Visitors can also tour the Knoles Log House and Franklin House to get an immersive experience of early Ross County life. You’ll really be able to picture yourself in history after exploring all of the exhibits.
The Heritage Center is a great place for anyone interested in learning more about the history of this region or just looking for a fun and educational activity.
8. Learn about Lucy Hayes
Lucy Webb Hayes was born in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1831 and is best known for serving as the First Lady of the United States from 1877 to 1881. She was the first woman to be referred to as First Lady!
The Lucy Hayes Heritage Center is the preserved childhood home of Lucy Webb Hayes located in town. This center offers guided tours and hosts events throughout the year to celebrate her life and legacy.
Visitors can explore the home and learn about her upbringing, family life, and accomplishments during her time as First Lady.
Guided tours of the home are available Fridays and Saturdays from April 1 to October, or by appointment, with admission costing $2.00.

The Chillicothe Trolley is a great way to explore downtown Chillicothe. New to town in the summer of 2022, the trolley offers free rides touring the city, running a loop route around popular downtown areas.
The trolley is handicap accessible with a ramp for wheelchairs, making it easy for everyone to enjoy the sights and sounds of the city.
The trolley also provides easy transportation from some of the public parking areas a little further from the action.
13. All Aboard at the Chillicothe Railroad Museum
The Chillicothe Railroad Museum is a unique and interesting attraction located on the edge of Yoctangee Park. The museum is housed in two red train cabooses, which provide an up-close look at the history of the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) railway.
Although the museum was not open during our visit, it was still fun to get an up-close look at the historic train cabooses!
The Chillicothe Railroad Museum is small, since it’s housed in these two retired cabooses, but makes a great quick stop while exploring downtown Chillicothe. Hours of operation vary seasonally, typically open more from April through October.
14. Appreciate Firefighting History at Phoenix Fire Company Museum
The Phoenix Fire Co. #2 Museum is a great place to explore the history of Ross County and Chillicothe. Located in downtown Chillicothe, this museum is open by appointment. The museum features various displays that showcase firefighting artifacts and memorabilia.
Established in the mid-1800s, Phoenix Fire Company was created due to the growing need for firefighting.
Efforts to begin the Phoenix Fire Museum started in the 1970s to commemorate firefighters who had courageously devoted their lives to protecting others.

Outdoor Activities Near Chillicothe

15. Relax at Yoctangee Park
After you’re done exploring the art at the Pump House, get outside and wander through the rest of Yoctangee Park. The space is a beautiful green oasis in Chillicothe that has been serving the community for many decades.
It features playground equipment, a pond, picnic shelters, pickleball courts, a disc golf course, and basketball and tennis courts.
The park also hosts two annual festivals: the Feast of the Flowering Moon Native American Festival on Memorial Day weekend and the Fall Halloween Festival.
16. Hike Highlands Nature Sanctuary, Part of the Arc of Appalachia Preserve System
The Arc of Appalachia Highlands Nature Sanctuary, located 35 minutes west of Chillicothe, is a great destination for hikers and outdoor lovers to get out and stretch their legs.
Hike some of the 16 miles of trails through the Rocky Fork Gorge. There are 12 trails of various lengths for you to enjoy. Start at the Appalachian Forest Museum and Office for maps and helpful staff when it’s open.
The 1.2-mile Etawah Woods Trail is a favorite moderate-difficulty trail, featuring a spur trail to see even more rock formations.
The 2.5-mile Cedar Run Trail is also moderate in difficulty and leads to the creek and a small hidden waterfall.
FYI: Dogs are only permitted on the Crow Point and Ridgeview Farm Trails. They try to protect the beautiful wildflowers growing next to some of the other trails.
17. Get Outdoors at Scioto Trail State Park
Scioto Trail State Park is the perfect place to get away from it all and relax in nature. Located 15-20 minutes south of Chillicothe, the park offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and paddling.
Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Scioto River Valley from the park. There are a few miles of trails for hiking, as well as a lake and beach for paddling. The park also has picnic areas and shelters available for visitors to use.
The park is open year-round. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful walk in nature or an exciting adventure on the lake, this 218-acre state park has it.

18. Explore Great Seal State Park
Great Seal State Park is another popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, offering a variety of trails with scenic vistas of the Scioto Valley. The best part is it’s just 10 minutes outside of downtown Chillicothe!
The park features an 18-hole disc golf course and picnic shelters. It also features the Storybook Trail, where the pages of a children’s book line a short loop trail. This is a great activity for families to enjoy!
Twenty-three miles of trails traverse the park and are available for hikers to explore. 17 of these miles of trails can be used by mountain bikers and horseback riders.
Hikers will find plenty of opportunities to explore the park’s diverse terrain, from rolling hills to dense forests. The trails offer breathtaking views of the valley below and provide an excellent opportunity for wildlife viewing.
For those wishing to stay longer, overnight camping is available at Great Seal State Park. There are several campsites located throughout the park that offer amenities such as fire rings and picnic tables.
19. Get out on the Water in a Canoe or Kayak
Canoeing or kayaking down Paint Creek is a great way to spend a peaceful day on the water in Chillicothe.
Waters Edge Canoe Livery offers rentals and drop-offs up the creek for varying-length trips. Spend as little as 2 hours or as long as 8+ hours on Paint Creek.
With different water levels throughout the year, there can be trips suitable for beginners and experienced kayakers alike.
You can also camp in a primitive tent along Paint Creek. If you don’t have a tent, you can rent one from Waters Edge. They’ll even set it up for you for a few extra dollars.
20. Go Off The Grid in the Tar Hollow State Forest
The perfect place to experience nature is just outside of Chillicothe, particularly at Tar Hollow State Forest. This majestic forest spans 16,000+ acres and offers all kinds of outdoor recreation and exploration.
Whether you prefer fishing, hunting, hiking, or biking, there are plenty of options available here!
For those looking to really get off the grid, Tar Hollow State Forest also provides a variety of primitive camping grounds that offer no electricity or running water; just real outdoor adventure. Here you can pitch a tent and enjoy the peaceful beauty of nature around you.
There are plenty of trails spanning the entirety of the forest so you can pick your own path from one camping spot to another. You can pick up both the Buckeye Trail and the Logan Trail in this state forest for backpacking opportunities.

The 2.5-hour production features Tecumseh, a Shawnee tribe leader, as the main character. He was extremely dedicated to defending his land and people, a legendary leader in the area. The show features an entertaining performance and an educational storyline.

What is the historical significance of Chillicothe, Ohio?
The Chillicothe area historically was the center of ancient Hopewell traditions many, many years ago. The culture flourished from 200 BC until 500 AD.
European settlers came to the area after the Treaty of Greenville in 1795 and founded Chillicothe in 1796. It served as the capital of Ohio from statehood in 1803 until 1810 then again from 1812 to 1816 until it was permanently relocated to Columbus.
