How to Spend the Perfect Active Weekend in Putnam County, WV

Before visiting Putnam County, WV, I expected a quiet, rural getaway centered around outdoor recreation. While it certainly delivered on the hiking, paddling, and outdoor activities, what surprised me most was everything in between.

Instead of having to drive long distances between activities, we found locally owned restaurants, charming shops, and coffee stops scattered throughout the area, just down the road from the parks and trailheads.

Better yet, unlike many of the mountain destinations I’ve explored in West Virginia, I rarely lost cell service, so it was easy to navigate and find our next stop.

Between the outdoor adventure and the convenience of nearby amenities, Putnam County struck a balance that made for an incredibly enjoyable weekend getaway. Now let me help you plan your visit!

Start Your Morning at Putnam Provisions

One of our favorite surprises of the weekend came before we even started hiking.

Just across the street from our hotel, we stopped by Putnam Provisions for a drink to start the day, and I ended up landing on a banana bread tea, which absolutely lived up to the recommendation.

We happened to visit on Saturday morning while the Putnam County Farmers Market was taking place. The market featured everything from fresh produce and baked goods to locally made crafts, and it gave us our first taste of the welcoming community that we’d continue to experience and enjoy throughout the trip.

Fuel Up at Bridge Café & Bistro

For breakfast, we headed to Bridge Café & Bistro before our first outdoor adventure.

With a full day ahead, it was the perfect place to grab breakfast and coffee before hitting the trails.

The menu includes hearty options like sausage gravy and biscuits, “hurricane hash,” and egg dishes. For a more unique breakfast plate, order the sweet potato pulled-pork pancakes. They were delicious, and they actually kept my energy up longer than a plain stack of flapjacks.

Explore the Meeks Mountain Trails

If you only have time for one hike during your weekend, make it one of the Meeks Mountain Trails.

Located just across the street from Bridge Café, this impressive trail system features more than 30 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, all built and maintained by volunteers since 2018.

After exploring around the area known as “the Bowl,” we chose a route that combined portions of the red-and-white-blazed trail with a few short detours.

One of my favorite parts of the hike was discovering colorful murals painted by local artists scattered through the beginning of the trail system. They were such a fun surprise, blending the natural environment with the nature- and adventure-inspired murals.

Another unexpected highlight came with opening up the Merlin Bird ID app. If you’ve never used it, you just open the app, tap the microphone button, and it listens for bird sounds.

As we hiked, it identified over a dozen birds, and some new ones that we hadn’t heard before. We especially loved when we actually heard a bluebird along the Bluebird Trail.

Whether you’re looking for a short walk or a longer hike, it’s easy to customize your route based on how much time and energy you have. It is a “mountain” after all!

Spend the Afternoon on the Water

After a morning on the trails, we traded our hiking boots for paddleboards and headed up to Winfield. From the boat launch, we paddled the Kanawha River with Mountaineer Paddle Company.

The weather wasn’t quite ideal, with moody skies looming over the bridge. We had to adjust our timing to enjoy the water at all, but we were rewarded with only one other boat as company during our time on the water. The cloudy skies actually made for a beautiful afternoon without the sun beating down, and once we started paddling, the river felt incredibly peaceful.

If you’ve never tried stand-up paddleboarding before, don’t let that stop you. Carter and his family made the experience approachable and fun, offering tips and making everyone feel comfortable before heading out. If you’re like me and don’t trust your balance to stand, you can kneel or sit while paddling, or even rent a kayak instead.

This part of the river is actually more like a large lake, with the flow slowed down by a dam just downstream. It’s a perfect spot for both seasoned paddlers and those who just want to try it out for a couple of hours.

Play One of West Virginia’s Top Disc Golf Courses

On Sunday morning, we made our way to Valley Park for a round of disc golf.

This course is consistently ranked among the best in West Virginia, and after playing it, it’s easy to understand why. The layout winds through mature trees with a great mix of open and wooded holes that make it enjoyable for players of all skill levels, even casual players like us.

Even if you don’t play disc golf, Valley Park is worth visiting. It’s a beautiful community park, perfect for a quiet walk along the crushed-stone trails. The trails take you along a small pond, where you’ll also find Putnam County’s Almost Heaven swing!

Serious disc golfers will also be happy to know there’s another highly regarded course nearby at Hurricane’s Bridge Park, making Putnam County a fun destination for a weekend disc golf trip.

Make Time for the Local Shops

One thing I always enjoy when visiting a new destination is exploring locally owned businesses, and Putnam County has plenty worth browsing.

A few local favorites we stopped at:

• Habitat Restore Boutique, perfect for thrifty shoppers looking for gently used housewares and other items.
• Bear Wood Company, featuring handcrafted wood products where you can watch the owner at work in the attached shop.
• Maddog disc golf shop, to pick up affordable gear to start, or further build out your disc golf hobby.

Where to Eat in Putnam County

One of the things that impressed me most was how well the outdoor recreation paired with the local food scene.

We would absolutely recommend each of our stops. You won’t leave hungry, even after an active weekend around Hurricane. Stops include:

• Putnam Provisions for coffees, teas, and the adjacent Saturday farmers market.
• Bridge Café & Bistro for breakfast right across from Meek’s Mountain before hitting the trails.
• Jo’s Belknap for wood-fired pizzas straight out of a Neapolitan pizza oven.
• The Pallet Bar, where we sampled several WV craft beers while watching a World Cup match and a baseball game. It’s a great place to end an evening.
• Whiskey Taco for a flavorful lunch and so many tacos to choose from before heading home.

Every stop felt welcoming, and we can assure you that you’re never far away from good food in Putnam County, WV.

Why Putnam County Makes the Perfect Weekend Getaway

What surprised us most during our visit to Putnam County wasn’t any single attraction, even though learning the story of Meeks Mountain was impressive. It was how naturally everything fit together.

We never felt like we were racing from one stop to the next. The hiking, paddling, shopping, and dining all flowed together, creating a weekend that felt active without being completely exhausting.

That’s what makes Putnam County such an enjoyable getaway. You can spend the day exploring and hiking forest trails, paddling the river, or playing disc golf, then slow things down with a great meal or a great WV-brewed beer in the evening.

If you’re looking for a road trip destination that’s easy to explore, filled with outdoor adventure, and supported by welcoming local businesses, Putnam County deserves a spot on your West Virginia bucket list.
