How to Spend One Day on Kelleys Island: Scenic Stops, Sips & Glacial Grooves
Even if you only have one day to explore Kelleys Island, don’t worry! You can still experience plenty of Lake Erie charm, natural beauty, and all the laid-back island vibes you want in just a short day trip.
I spent one full day exploring this hidden gem in Ohio’s Shores & Islands region with their team, and I was amazed by how much we were able to fit in to the day without ever feeling rushed.
Between quiet beaches, colorful shops, and scenic Lake Erie views, Kelleys Island moves at just the right pace for my kind of getaway; slow enough to relax, yet full of adventure if you want it.
Whether you’re visiting for a sunny summer escape or a crisp fall getaway, this small island packs in big personality. Often overshadowed by the nearby Put-in-Bay attractions, Kelleys Island has a completely different feel.
Overnight accommodations are limited, but that just makes a day trip the perfect way to experience it.
From cruising the island by golf cart to sipping wine at local vineyards, here’s exactly how to make the most of a day on Kelleys Island.

Start with a Scenic Ferry Ride
Your day will begin with a morning ferry ride from Marblehead. The trip to Kelleys Island takes about 30 minutes, and fees are dependent on the size of your vehicle.
You can bring your car, but for a more relaxed island experience, leave it behind and rent a golf cart once you arrive. The best way to get around on the island is by golf cart, anyway!

If the weather cooperates (or even if it doesn’t, if you want to brave the elements, like we did!), you can get out of your vehicle and enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Erie and the surrounding islands from the ferry’s bridge.
We had a little bit of a dreary day for our trip, but the rain held off for some of our morning ferry ride. I’d recommend getting out to enjoy the views if you can!
The Kelleys Island Ferry Line offers a quick, breezy ride across Lake Erie.
Pro Tip: Make sure you’re in line to board the ferry with time to spare. Check the schedule ahead of time, and give yourself plenty of time! Don’t wait until right at the scheduled departure time to get in line. If the boat is full or you’re a little late, you might have to wait an hour for the next trip.
Relax and Shop Downtown
Before heading out too far, take a little time to browse the shops lining the streets surrounding Caddy Shack Square.
If you’re a coffee person, grab a cup at Kelleys Island Coffee Company. They have some really fun specialty drink suggestions. I really enjoyed my Lavender Haze!

Looking for handmade gifts or a sweet treat to take back home with you? Stop by a few of the shops up and down the street for local goodies, snacks, unique souvenirs, and island-themed apparel.
There’s a cozy, small-town feel among the shopping area that makes it easy to spend some time browsing all the shelves.
Get Rolling with a Golf Cart
After docking and arriving at Kelleys Island, head back over to Caddy Shack Square.
Now that you’ve grabbed your coffee and spent some time wandering the street, it’s time to rent a golf cart.
Rentals are quick and easy, with plenty of options available, especially if you reserve in advance.
You can drive your golf cart down the road and enjoy easier parking with a smaller, more convenient mode of transportation than your giant SUV (or whatever vehicle you drive).
It’s the islander way to travel, giving you more freedom to explore at your own pace without having to worry as much about how spots are going to be.
Explore the Sculpture Garden
Next, make your way to the Charles Herndon Galleries and Sculpture Garden, one of the most hidden stops on the island. The 10-acre property is dotted with outdoor sculptures. Some invite you to explore up close or walk among them, while others blend seamlessly into the surrounding woods and fields.
When we visited, I had the chance to meet the artists in residence, each working in a different style, including glassblowing, beadwork, and painting.
Watching their demos and hearing about their connections to the island’s beauty added an extra element to the experience. It was incredible to see their creativity and a live solo glass-blowing demonstration in real time.

Lunch and Wine at Kelley’s Island Wine Co.
By now, you’ll definitely be ready for a bite, and we’re going to head to one of the fun wineries on Kelleys Island.
Kelley’s Island Wine Co. is a great lunch stop, serving up casual eats and house-made wines in a family-friendly setting. The grilled cheese special of the day, the pizza, and the cheeses were delicious. You really can’t go wrong with any of the food here.
The relaxed outdoor patio is the perfect place to relax on a nice day. The weather didn’t quite cooperate, so we didn’t get to enjoy that space as much as we maybe would have liked, but that gives me a reason to return!

Treat Yourself at Monarch Winery
After lunch at Kelleys Island Wine Co., head just down the road to Monarch Winery for something sweet to cap off your afternoon.
This boutique winery specializes in fruit-forward wines and fun frozen wine slushies (the kind that just taste like summer in a cup). They’re definitely on the sweeter side, making this the perfect stop for dessert or a cool treat on a hot afternoon.
The outdoor wine garden has a relaxed, welcoming feel, with lots of tables scattered throughout. You could even spend some time enjoying the company of your group with a card game or other entertainment, like the lively group we noticed across the garden while we were visiting.
Inside, you’ll find a small shop with locally made goodies, jams, and souvenirs. There was a decent selection, ideal for taking a little piece of the island home.

Marvel at the Glacial Grooves
The island’s most iconic natural feature is a must-visit on a trip out to Kelleys Island. This is one of the only places in the world where you can see this type of geological formation, and it’s so easily accessible!
The Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve is home to massive grooves carved into limestone by glaciers thousands of years ago.
Standing next to them, it’s hard not to feel a sense of awe at the sheer force of nature that shaped this island and many of the landscapes around the Great Lakes region.
The deep striations and perfectly parallel lines stretch farther than you expect, offering a powerful visual reminder of the ice age’s impact on this landscape. I couldn’t help but think of this spot and imagine large glaciers carving the Finger Lakes in upstate New York, too.
A short boardwalk trail allows you to view the grooves from all angles. The Kelleys Island State Park trails are close by, too, if you want to enjoy 1-2 additional miles of hiking.

Quick Stop at Kelleys Island State Park
Just across the road, Kelleys Island State Park offers a quiet beach, a few hiking trails, and a picnic spot right by the water.
It’s a great spot for a snack or to just enjoy the lake views.
The state park also offers a campground for overnight stays, although securing a site can be competitive!
Whether you want full hook-ups, a primitive non-electric site, a yurt, or a cabin, you’ll want to try to book 6 months in advance when reservations become available.
Photo Op at the Lake Erie Love Sign
For your final stop on Kelleys Island, make your way to West Bay. It’s the perfect place to wind down the day and soak in those beautiful Lake Erie views.

Snap a photo with the colorful Lake Erie Love sign, one of the island’s photogenic spots, for your photo collection.
The laid-back lakeside patio across the street here is one of the best places on the island to catch the sunset. Grab a drink, find a seat facing the water, and watch as the sky (hopefully) lights up in shades of pink and orange over the lake.
Again, the weather did not cooperate on our visit for the best sunset, but we still made the most of our time, nonetheless!
Catch the Ferry Back
After the sun dips below the horizon, make your way back toward the ferry. The short ride to the mainland feels a little bittersweet.
Whether you spent your day biking the island roads, hiking the trails, relaxing by the water, or hopping between wineries, Kelleys Island has a way of slowing you down and reminding you to savor every simple, scenic moment.
You’ll be hungry by the time you get back to the mainland, so plan to grab a bite to eat at one of the fantastic restaurants in Marblehead.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re into nature, wine tasting, or just want to slow down and soak up island life in the Midwest, Kelleys Island makes for a perfect day trip. It’s small enough to easily explore in a day, but full of hidden gems that will leave you planning your next visit before the ferry even docks.
